A huge debate erupted recently over the colour of a dress worn at the wedding of Grace and Kier Johnston by the mother of the bride, Cecilia Bleasdale.
A photo of the dress, taken by Cecilia, caused some confusion amongst friends and family, so one friend of the happy couple, Caitlin McNeill, decided to post the picture on her tumblr account and it quickly went viral.
The two-tone dress appeared to be black and blue to some and white and gold to others, causing many an online argument that was still not settled by the time celebrities such as Kanye West, Taylor Swift and Oscar winner Julianne Moore got involved.
The science behind the confusion is that it is simply and optical illusion that leads to the interpretation of the garment’s colours being influenced by the colours that surround it. Of course, when photographs are taken by a professional wedding photographer from Liverpool or beyond, high-quality snapshots are guaranteed and such optical conundrums can be avoided.
The company that made the dress, Roman Originals, has now reportedly been inundated with calls from people looking to buy the same dress, as well as many others it has in stock. Certainly, it gives those planning a wedding some food for thought about what to wear.
For those keen to know the actual colour, The Daily Mail reported later that it was in fact blue and black, offering alternate photographs showing the garment from other angles.
