Bridge cameras
Bridge devices are midway between the basic point-and-shoot compacts and high-tech DSLRs. They offer a combination of a small format body and a wide focal range. Bridge cameras are also known as superzooms due to the enhanced optics they offer users. Such equipment is ideal for taking close up shots and experimenting with some limited manual functions.
Most bridge cameras have built in image-stabilisation systems, which help to increase a photograph’s sharpness. The further a camera is zooming in, the harder it has to work to stabilise the image. When a user is intending on taking many long-range shots, an image-stabilisation system, whether lens or sensor based, is essential.
Bridge cameras are usually significantly bigger than compact devices and look similar to some DSLR models. However, unlike DSLRs, bridges do not usually have manual viewfinders, only electronic ones. This allows for the relatively easy framing of shots.
Bridge units are ideal for those looking to capture more technically advanced images and experiment with their photography skills. For those without the confidence to work DSLR devices or the bank balance to purchase one, they are perfect. However, being significantly larger than compact models, they do not always suit people looking for easy-to-carry cameras that can be slipped into a bag or pocket.
DSLR cameras
DSLR, or digital single lens reflex, cameras are generally considered to be the best for capturing high-quality images and for giving users complete control over the functions involved. The devices have large sensors, which make them able to take higher quality shots in low lighting, when compared to other cameras. Many DSLRs can take images in both RAW and JPEG format at the same time, giving the user the option of choosing compact or larger versions of each image captured.
DSLR units have been designed to accommodate a variety of lenses, so photographers can choose which ones suit their needs best. There are also a large number of other accessories available for DSLR cameras. These include flashguns, extra battery grips and external microphones for stereo sound recording.
DSLR cameras are perfect for those photographers with the time and know-how to invest into improving their skills and capturing the best possible images. Those seeking full control over the functionality of their camera would possibly only be satisfied with a DSLR. On the negative side, these devices can be rather expensive, so it is definitely not a decision to take lightly.
