When the Daily Mail reported that the government was planning to change the law allowing couples to be married wearing nothing, it caused a bit of a stir on social media. The article was shared almost 2,000 times, thoughJustice Secretary, Chris Grayling, has since taken to the airwaves to dismiss the idea.
A government review kicked off recently to look into non-religious and, in particular, humanist weddings, which are currently recognised in Scotland but not yet in England and Wales. It seems, however, that British Naturism – the campaigning organisation that advocates greater tolerance and understanding of naturism – has noted its interest.
Grayling was quick to shoot down these claims, telling Andrew Neill on his Sunday Politics show that:
“[…] there’s a difference between someone expressing an interest and [it] actually happening.”
He expanded on the suggestion by stating that officials were focusing primarily on the subject of allowing humanist weddings.
The issue has highlighted the ongoing topic of who can be married and how they go about it. The 2013 Marriage (same sex couples) Act opened up marriage to couples that are gay and now, the government seems keen to look at relaxing the law around who can conduct the wedding. Changes could also address the environment in which the ceremony is conducted, potentially allowing weddings to take place in people’s own homes.
