Having a country lockdown might seem depressing but you should take this opportunity to flex those creative muscles and take time out to practice. You now have the time!
This enforced ‘down time’ can actually give you the opportunity to try new things and maybe do some all-essential admin.
Photography activities to help you through lockdown
I’ve put together a list of ten activities to help keep your head in the game and make sure you’re action-ready when life kicks back into gear. As a professional Liverpool wedding photographer it’s important to keep my creative head on. But also be prepared for when lockdown is lifted so I can get back into the swing of things at 110 miles an hour!
- It may seem boring, but if you’ve been putting off backing up your work, now is the perfect opportunity. Keeping a backup should be high on the list of anyone dealing with digital files to help protect your precious photographs.
- Update your portfolio! You’ve seen all of the wonderful work you’ve done recently, but has your audience? Try updating your website and social media with your new favourite images. You could even create a slideshow.
- If your website hasn’t been updated since it first went live, it might be time to take a look at your copy. Is it still up to date, and do the words represent you and your business the way you want them to?
- Give yourself small photographic projects to do at home, and if you can, rope in a family member or two as models. If you’re spending lockdown alone, try your hand at some self-portraiture. You can use this as an opportunity to experiment and get creative. I did this myself recently and you can check out the results here
- If there are any projects you’ve been putting off finishing, now’s the perfect time to get them finished. When else will you have so much time to focus on the things at the bottom of your to-do list?
- Update your blog with helpful photography articles (like this one!) and posts about your work, or start one if you haven’t got a blog yet. It’ll help keep your mind focused on your craft, and show your clients you’re still active.
- Research your fellow photographers’ work for inspiration. Have a look at what they’ve been up to, and what tricks and techniques they use. You may find something that sparks new creative energy in your own work.
- Take some time to read photography books or articles online. No matter how experienced someone is, it’s important to keep learning and developing your skills. You may be able to find bundles of magazines on eBay for surprisingly low prices, so it’s worth taking a look to see what’s available.
- Join a few facebook groups and engage with the online photographic community to share your experiences, and maybe ask a few questions if you have any.
- Lastly, when did your local PC system get some much needed TLC? Over time our systems can become clogged with both digital files and literal dust. Spend some time archiving or deleting old files, and take care to get your computer dust and dirt free if you’re able to. It should help speed everything up.
There’s probably a whole bunch more, but hopefully that’s enough to get you back to feeling motivated with your photography during this strange time.
